ABOUT: Andrew was born to a muggleborn (father) and a muggle (mother) in Texas (they lived on the gulf coast). He was the first child of the couple, and was born when they were both teenagers. Because of the pregnancy they were forced to marry by their parents. But neither was really ready to settle down and raise a kid, so he spent a lot of time with his maternal grandparents who were quite religious, so he spent many hours at church with them. Family trips were road trips to national parks, where Andrew would explore the wilds. When he was about 4 his parents split, and he was raised solely by his mom and her parents, and had no contact with his father for many years. His mother eventually married a military man and had 3 children with him (2 boys and a girl). With his step-dad the family moved around and away from his grandparents, but his mother had settled down and went to raising them. 

But as Andrew started to get older, there were weird things that started to happen. His grandparents blamed it on not going to church, and his mother had no clue. But on his 11th birthday things were explained and made sense. And so off he went to school (it was just explained as boarding school). On his sorting both Horned Serpent and Thunderbird wanted him, but he chose Thunderbird because it reminded him of the birds he used to watch when he was a child. Things went pretty well overall. Until he was home at Christmas time during his 2nd year. His youngest sibling was under 6 months and his mother was struggling. She ended up trying to hurt them, but the 4 children all managed to be unharmed physically. She still took her own life in front of the kids, and it scarred Andrew. He went back to the school a little more closed off, and threw himself into his studies. He found out during this term his step-father no longer wanted him, so it was back to his grandparents at the end of the year.

Of course this also happened to be about when Andrew was figuring out that he only had feelings for the guys in his class. Of course this wasn't at all in line with what his grandparents taught, and in fact his uncle (who Andrew had been very close with growing up as his uncle had been 15 when he was born) had been thrown out of the house at 22 for daring to mention his boyfriend. So it lead to a lot of confusion and secrecy. Although he was able to talk to his uncle about it, and he felt some relief knowing he had some support. And while he didn't necessarily have enough courage to be open and date publicly, he did have a couple relationships in school.

It was at school he discovered his knack for transfiguration. He loved the subject and it just seemed to come easy to him. He'd even spend extra time with the professor. He learned how to become an animagus while he was still in school, discovering the form matched that of his patronus of a wolf. Once he left school he travelled the world learning new skills and gaining new knowledge. It was during this time that his grandparents found out he was interested in males, and told him to not return. But he always had a home with his uncle. but there was no need for that. When he was 28 he got a letter from the school asking him to take the position of transfiguration professor, as his was leaving the post and had recommended him. He's been here ever since.
